Get Started: Ice Fishing Walleye on Lake Sakakawea (how to)
What part of the lake ? how do you find them ?
I need to keep some to smoke as well. Def underutilized!
It’s a tasty snack for sure!
In general, do you keep 75 cm maximum or less for pike? What region are you based in? many people in the United States don't really like eating pike and 100% release it?
Have you tried using the same plastics throughout the ice for walleye? Heading to the dry arm in a couple weeks and curious how effective they might be. Appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge!
@@MontanaWalleyeAngler I haven’t targeted walleye through the ice on peck very much. When I have I’ve done well on eater size walleye with jigging raps in size 5 and 7. For large walleye I think lipless cranks like the Nishine Simcoe 75 hw and the rapala rippin rap might be very good options at triggering big fish but I can’t say from personal experience ice fishing. During open water I’ve caught some very big spring and fall walleye on peck on the lipless cranks I just mentioned. I might make a trip out there sooner than later targeting large walleye through the ice…
@@FishcastAngling Cool thanks. We'll be there the 19th - 23rd. Hoping to put some big walleye topside! Lakers would definitely be a bonus as well.
@@MontanaWalleyeAngler How did your trip end up? I'm headed there the end of February.
@@aaronhelland ruclips.net/video/9v60VZice8c/видео.htmlsi=c0nI4ZdoFORy3KKb Video from the trip. We caught a few walleye, several pike and some catfish. Definitely had to work for them and conditions didn’t help. Super cold and windy both days. The third day we moved to Nelson Reservoir and caught a pile of perch and a few walleye.
@ What part of the lake are you headed? If I can help point you in the right direction let me know.
Brother… your my hero. Roughly same tactics for early ice off open water jigging??? I love you
I haven’t done much laker fishing immediately after ice out, but within 3 weeks of ice out yes, really quite similar. One main difference is once the ice leaves there’s a tendency for sunrise and sunset to be more consistent players. 50-80’ and sometimes much shallower (but less consistent shallow) is a good depth range to target them early spring.
@@FishcastAnglinggracias, happy new year from CO!
@ happy new year to you also!!
When you got the smallie record, I didn't even realize it was you, a guy I follow and watch your videos a lot. Hit me up when your back. I'd love to shake your hand bud 👍 PS early ice and ice off may be close together this year! 😆
@@chrisjacka193 haha sounds good!! and glad you like watching the videos!! I was thinking there could be some upcoming limited walking opportunities to ice fish for lakers fairly soon with the weather forecast but will be interesting to see how it shakes out especially with some snow forecasted this weekend. I’ve been watching the lake on satellite imagery quite a bit keeping tabs on her haha
2 years ago the ONLY time we got fish there was 7am to 830am then it was rough until 5pm to 6:30pm. I was able to get them throughout the day in 65 to 70ft of water on hump.
Interesting! Through the ice or open water? During open water first light can be very good in my experience when the are shallow (less than 90’)
@ Ice fishing. I did fish a different area. I rode out to the Pines. 50 to 70 feet of water. The afternoon bite by far was always the best. Open water is usually from 11am to 5pm non stop. Great tips, thanks for the video, just finished watching it. :)
100% catch and release pike ?
@@pierrehenneguez6648 catch and release the big ones and occasionally harvest some smaller ones
@FishcastAngling max 75 cm?
@@pierrehenneguez6648 yep, if I keep a few they are usually about 75cm or 30 inches or less
@@FishcastAngling maximum 30 inches ? and you rarely keep any I suppose? it's not the most consumed fish

It's official! Congrats Josh all that hard work payed off. Glad we could be apart of it.
@@swatefishing thanks! Glad it worked out like it did, fun to share it with you guys!
Sorry I'm late but yes finally a new video I've been waiting ages for you to come out a new video! That is soo awesome that you caught the new MT state record SMB! Congrats 😀
Thanks much for watching the videos and the comment!!
Have you noticed less fish at Peck the last few years? I've fished it for a number of years and the numbers are declining IMO
I don’t fish the lakers consistently enough to speak much on it. But I’d say no, I’m not seeing that. Definitely seeing way more little fish in the mix than I’m used to. But for numbers of quality fish, I’d say the biggest players have to do with seasonal water conditions and baitfish etc and how consolidated the lakers are in zones people are targeting.
Congratulations Josh, you deserve to be on top of the podium. Hard Work Pays Off!
Thanks much!!
That thing is a slab! Congratulations!
Thanks!!
Great job Josh! Congratulations that’s a giant fish! I’m going to have to check out this Jurassic Park you speak of 😂
The Park is calling you home! 😂
I been fishing deeper river walleye over 25 yrs. I fish 25 to 40 feet deep daily. I've caught and released so many big walleye over 10 lbs deep and successfully released by fizzing them. A must know. Good video, nice fish.
@@Humborg1 thanks for sharing!
Hey buddy miss your videos, hope you're doing well and we see you posting again. :)
I’m still kicking! Thanks for the comment!
We’ve camped at Bone creek on the North shore of Ft Peck. Smallmouth around islands during spring spawning season. Walleye and Pike as well. He is right about the weather warning. Big lake and big winds can really create dangerous wave conditions. This was before Ft Peck was discovered as a Walleye lake. Back in the day, we’d see just a few boats. Now, there’s a boat on every point,it seems. The Rattle Trap he showed was a killer bait.
Thank you for this info. :)
@MountainStateAngler thanks for watching!
Livescope is a load of garbage . Try fishing
Take that scope away you’d be lost. This shit has completely ruined fishing. This is not fishing it’s like playing a video game
Do you still guide?!
Yeah, I still do trips on Fort Peck and Lake Sakakawea
Reeling lakers and rocking to Chevelle ! Tripled up !!!!
They sure seem to like chevelle haha! Thanks for watching!
Nice
Nice
Hey from south Sweden here! Actually from Svängsta, 300yrds from the ABU factory is where I live! I fish for pike ONLY, nothing else, ever! I have just watched a few mins of this video and I really like you telling that everyone sucks at the beginning because I'm fairly new to fishing, and I have struggled as hell.. But, I have focused on learning to fish my lures and baitcasters all winter thru when it wasn't below freezing and I feel alot more confident in what to do to get a better catch rate, and am applying it to my fishing, which I started to focus on catching the last month. Have had a few so seems to work.. we'll see in the end of the year :)
Nice to see a McRubber!!
Thanks a bunch for watching!! Really cool you get to chase them in Sweden!! Hope your season goes well!!
Thank you so much for all the tips and tricks. I'm retired Texas highway department and I am on a fishing adventure of a lifetime. I spent my childhood reading about Pike and muskie in outdoor life and Field & stream. I am on a mission to catch my first Pike 👍 I'm here outside of Roosevelt national park, waiting for the ice out on Sak.
Thanks for watching! Hope your mission goes well!!! Sakakawea doesn’t always have high numbers of pike but definitely has quality!
@@FishcastAngling .... Which lake do you recommend for high numbers?
Man I'm jealous you literally live in the mecca of fishing for all species especially the easy Lake Trout fishing of the world. I live through you. :)
It’s a great area for sure!
Awesome conditions, stellar day! Are you running a gopro 360? How is it? Great vid!
Thanks, Carl!! Yes the GoPro max , it was my first time using it
So far I’m like the GoPro max. Can use it for 360 footage or just as regular cam. Seems to have good sound quality without an external mic. The 360 footage takes a bit to edit but relative speaking really quite easy
Nice work!
Thanks, Scott!
Hahaha, that double up between the legs! Epic
So question why dont you make fishing videos on Missouri River or on Yellowstone River? Cuz i think they would be pretty good videos! And also great Fort Peck video 😀
Thanks for watching and the comment! I fish and film a lot of adventures I never get around to editing haha but with input like yours might be a higher chance I try to get out a video river fishing sometime!
Are those pants waterproof?
Water resistant 🤣 I could’ve used some waders for that haha
Man im trying to get over there on the ice asap for lake trout, im in idaho so a little bit of a drive
Hope you make it out! Pretty good ice at the moment out here but gonna get a little soft in the coming week. Thanks for watching the video!
